Separate Chases End in Arrest of 3 People

Two car chases in Ventura County on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning resulted in the arrest of a Moorpark man and two juveniles who had stolen a car in Los Angeles County.

About 10 p.m. Tuesday, deputies on surveillance on north Ventura Avenue near Canada Larga Road saw a black truck come to a skidding stop and the driver then dumping glass and other objects onto the road. When deputies approached the man, he got back in the truck and took off.

During the deputies’ pursuit, the driver rammed four patrol cars. One deputy was struck but suffered only minor injuries.

The truck also collided with another motorist on California 150 at Boardman Road, causing the other driver to lose control and crash. At California 150 and Reeves Road, the truck ran off the road and hit a tree.

Ventura County Fire Department personnel had to cut the driver out of his truck. He suffered a broken leg and several cuts to his face and arms.

James Stephen Vogt, 36, of Moorpark was arrested on suspicion of of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, felony evading, felony hit and run and felony driving under the influence.

The second chase began about 1 a.m. Wednesday when two male juveniles in a Toyota Camry that authorities later determined had been stolen in Lynwood entered the county on California 118. California Highway Patrol officers chased the juveniles, a 13-year-old from Lynwood and a 17-year-old from Arizona, south on the Moorpark Freeway and north on the Ventura Freeway.

During the pursuit, the boys drove between 40 and 90 mph and traded off driving the car while it was in motion.

The pursuit ended in Camarillo about 1:30 a.m., when the stolen car was recovered and the boys were arrested and taken to juvenile hall.
