SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Five young men suspected of committing 31 South County burglaries in the past month were arrested early Friday in Dana Point, police said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department had assembled a 30-member multi-agency team to end a rash of break-ins of coffee shops, auto-repair businesses and vehicles parked on the street, Sheriff’s Lt. Paul Ratchford said.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Friday, officers arrested Jayson Townsend, 21, of Dana Point, who police believe was the ring leader. Also arrested were Dana Point residents Trevor Bryant, 18; Moshe Tarter, 20; and Ryan Lafevre, 19; and Laguna Niguel resident Jarrett Craig, 18.

The five face charges of possession of burglary tools and stolen property in connection with the crime spree, which included six break-ins early Tuesday in Laguna Beach.

When the five men, who had been under surveillance, were arrested, officers recovered stolen property, included 3,300 Los Angeles Dodgers baseball tickets taken from a video store, Ratchford said.

Authorities said the young men are suspects in storefront and vehicle burglaries in Dana Point, Laguna Beach, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
