Temperatures soared to 90 degrees in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, tying a record set in 1961.

Heat scorched the Southland as the mercury reached 96 degrees in Monrovia, 94 in Montebello, 93 in San Gabriel and 92 in Pasadena.

In Woodland Hills, the temperature hit 93, five degrees under the record set in 1987, said Guy Pearson, a forecast meteorologist with WeatherData.

Warm temperatures were recorded around the state, Pearson said. In San Jose, the high was 93, shattering the previous record of 89 degrees set in 1987.

The heat came little more than a week after a storm brought record low temperatures to L.A.

Temperatures are expected to ease today downtown, with morning low clouds and fog, said Wes Etheredge, a meteorologist with WeatherData. At the Civic Center, a high of 88 is expected.

But in some areas, such as Riverside, Ontario and Montebello, the heat is expected to continue, Etheredge said. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected across the region Sunday.
