Rocket scientist wannabes will swarm Tustin High School, 1171 El Camino Real, on Saturday for the Future Scientist and Engineers of America’s annual “rocket” competition. The entries may appear to be simple plastic soda bottles, but with the right design and know-how--plus compressed air and water--they become airborne.

There are four team divisions: elementary, middle and high school, and an open division for adults. Since entries are judged solely on time aloft in two attempts, participants may customize their rockets with fins and parachutes to keep them in the air longer. Prizes and trophies will be awarded. Team entries are free, and a complimentary lunch will be served.

The nonprofit organization started in Orange County in 1990 to address the decline in the number of students enrolled in college science and engineering programs. The public is welcome at the competition, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information: (714) 229-2226.
