Sailer, Walendy to Sign With 49ers

Former Notre Dame High kicker Chris Sailer and former Westlake fullback Craig Walendy, teammates at UCLA, have agreed to sign as free agents with the San Francisco 49ers.

Also planning to sign with the 49ers is tight end Mike Grieb from UCLA. Former Bruin Coach Terry Donahue is the 49ers’ director of player personnel.

Receiver Mike Ogas of Cal State Northridge signed with the St. Louis Rams.

Former Hart linebacker John McLaughlin of California was drafted in the fifth round by Tampa Bay on Sunday. Former Westlake wide receiver Billy Miller of USC was taken in the seventh round by Denver.

* Danny Brockdorf of Agoura High has committed to play football for Ohio Wesleyan, a non-scholarship Division III program. Brockdorf was recruited as a kicker. He played on both lines for Agoura.

BASEBALL

* Former Notre Dame outfielder Jorge Piedra, one of the top prospects in the Dodger organization, is serving a suspension after being sent home from spring training last month for violating a team rule, according to assistant general manager Bill Geivett.

Piedra, who batted .383 at Great Falls last season, is expected to resume playing next month.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Senior Blaine Bussey of Taft High, the defending City Section champion in the boys’ 400 meters, and sophomore Schquay Brignac of Cleveland, defending City champion in the girls’ high jump, have regained their athletic eligibility by attaining grade-point averages of 2.0 or higher on their mid-semester report cards.

Bussey, third in the state championships last year, lowered his career best to a hand-timed 47.0 in a January all-comers meet at Cal State Northridge before being declared ineligible.

Brignac, fourth in the 1998 state meet, cleared 5-9 for Cleveland last year.

* Junior Jayda Bailey, who won the girls’ 400 for Taft in the 1998 City championships, is attending Birmingham, but her athletic eligibility has yet to be determined, according to City Section assistant commissioner Jeff Halpern.

Bailey, who ranks sixth on the all-time region list in the 400 with a best of 54.20, transferred from Taft to El Camino Real last summer, but withdrew after one semester.

Halpern said Bailey was enrolled in some sort of alternative schooling before coming to Birmingham.

BASKETBALL

* Joey Youman of Sylmar High has signed a letter of intent to play for Cal State Los Angeles, Sylmar Coach Bort Escoto said.

Youman averaged 10 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, quarterfinalists in the City Championships.

VOLLEYBALL

Canyon High was the only boys’ team from the region to reach the quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions at Cal State Northridge on Saturday.

Canyon defeated Quartz Hill in the second round, but lost to Lakewood in the quarterfinals. Highland, Taft and Chatsworth lost in the second round.

The 50-team tournament was won by Fountain Valley, which defeated defending champion La Costa Canyon.

EQUESTRIAN

* La Reina High emerged as overall team champion at the Interscholastic Equesterian League Championship Show at Hansen Dam Equestrian Center on Saturday.

Marissa Banks, a freshman from Harvard-Westlake, was individual high-point champion. Harvard-Westlake was team runner-up.

La Reina won the varsity and junior varsity team titles. Thousand Oaks Hillcrest Christian was freshman champion.

In the hunters/jumpers/equitation class, individual champions included Banks in freshman and Brianna Dollinger of Harvard-Westlake in novice.

In dressage, individual champions included Andrea Morillas of Agoura in varsity, Samantha Garfinkel of La Reina in junior varsity, Kelsey Rafferty of Hillcrest Christian in freshman and Ashlyn Littmann of La Reina in novice.
