Plan for Airport Cargo Ramp Advances

The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners approved a request for bids Tuesday for construction of a new cargo ramp at Palmdale Regional Airport.

An estimated $1.5 million is needed to fund construction of the facility, with plans calling for it to be large enough to accommodate two cargo aircraft at the same time, said Scott Read, spokesman for the Los Angeles city department that runs the Palmdale airport.

Plans also call for a bypass taxiway to be built, Read said. Portions of two taxiways adjacent to the airport terminal would also be reconstructed.

“When this ramp project is completed, Palmdale will be a viable alternative to LAX [Los Angeles International Airport] for cargo operations,” said John J. Driscoll, executive director of the airports department.

The cargo ramp project is expected to be awarded this summer. Construction is expected to begin in November.
