Royals Lead, 5-1, Then Lose in 13th

Chris Latham hit a 13th-inning sacrifice fly and rookie Chad Allen drove in a career-high four runs, leading the Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals, 8-7, Tuesday night as the Royals, 1-7 at home, wasted leads of 5-1 and 7-5.

Matt Lawton was three for seven in his second consecutive three-hit game, and Rick Aguilera (3-0) pitched three hitless innings.

Doug Mientkiewicz was walked leading off the 13th by Jay Witasick (0-1), the sixth Kansas City pitcher. Javier Valentin doubled, Denny Hocking was walked intentionally and Latham’s fly out drove in the go-ahead run.

Rookie Carlos Beltran had his first four-hit game for the Royals, going four for six.

Benj Sampson gave up five hits and five runs in three innings and his ERA remained at 15.00 in four appearances. Royal starter Jim Pittsley gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings.

Mike Trombley, who has pitched 13 2/3 scoreless innings this season, started the eighth and pitched three innings for the Twins.

AROUND THE MAJORS / Reds’ Schott Agrees to Sell

Marge Schott agreed to sell control of the Cincinnati Reds for $67 million, leaving her one step away from the end of her tumultuous 15-year reign. The other major league owners have to approve the sale to Cincinnati financier Carl Lindner and two of the other limited partners, a process that usually takes six to 15 months but is expected to move quickly, perhaps with a vote as soon as June.

Bonds Out at Least 10 Weeks

Barry Bonds had surgery on his left elbow and triceps and is expected to miss 10 weeks. An MRI taken Sunday night revealed the damaged tendon in Bonds’ left triceps, further compounding initial findings of bone spurs in the San Francisco outfielder’s elbow. . . . Giant third baseman Charlie Hayes was suspended for four games by the National League for charging the mound from second base after getting into a heated exchange with Arizona pitcher Todd Stottlemyre Friday night. Both Hayes and Stottlemyre were fined $2,000, but Stottlemyre was not suspended. Hayes decided not to appeal the suspension and started serving it Tuesday night.

One day after Cal Ripken went on the disabled list for the first time in his career, he was joined by Will Clark. Clark has a fractured left thumb. . . . The Toronto Blue Jays placed designated hitter Dave Hollins on the 15-day disabled list because of a fractured left hand.
