ART

With its sparkling deserts, dramatic mountains and an unmatched clarity of light, the American West has been a focal point for artists since before the turn of the century. William Wendt, Carl Oscar Borg, Edward Weston and Richard Misrach are among the many influential painters and photographers who came west in the early 20th century to document its timeless beauty and natural drama. Works by these and other artists are on view through Sunday in “Canyons and Deserts: Picturing the Western Landscape” at the Orange County Museum of Art/South Coast Plaza Gallery, 3333 Bristol St., Costa Mesa. 10 a.m.-9 p.m. today and Friday. 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday. 11 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Sunday. Free. (714) 662-3366.

THEATER

“The Sisters Rosensweig,” Wendy Wasserstein’s account of two Jewish sisters from New York who come to England to have a reunion and vacation with their other sister, closes Sunday at the Newport Theatre Arts Center, 2501 Cliff Drive, Newport Beach. “Watching a Wendy Wasserstein play is like reading a year’s worth of the comic strip ‘Cathy,’ but director Darlene Hunter-Chaffee and a generally good cast make this revival warm and funny, with insight into the world Wasserstein creates,” T.H. McCulloh wrote for The Times. 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday. 2:30 p.m. Sunday. $13. (949) 631-0288.

FAMILY

More than two centuries after Capt. James Cook made his historic journey in search of the “great south continent,” his ship, the bark Endeavour, is once again sailing the open seas; but this time not as a research vessel, but as an oceangoing historical museum. Through Sunday, the public can tour a board-by-board re-creation of the famous brig that bore Cook on his three historic voyages. Lovingly crafted from the ship’s original blueprints, the new Endeavour is authentic in every detail and includes a costumed crew that answers questions and offer insights into life on the high seas in the 18th century. Tours continue noon-6 p.m. today and Friday, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Newport Harbor, next to the Pride of Newport, 151 E. Coast Highway, Newport Beach. $5-$10. (949) 673-7863.
