Fire Damages Home; Woman, 83, Injured
An early morning fire caused more than $100,000 in damage to a Santa Rosa Valley home and minor injuries to one of its elderly occupants, authorities said.
The fire broke out at the Subida Circle home just before 6:30 a.m., stirring awake 63-year-old resident Sharon Mastous, county fire authorities said.
Mastous woke her 83-year-old aunt, Ann Brelsford, before calling 911, authorities said. Both women made it out of the house safely, though Brelsford, who is deaf, was treated for smoke inhalation at Los Robles Regional Medical Center.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which caused an estimated $135,000 in damage to the contents and structure of the home, authorities said. The fire started when a portable heater ignited combustible material in a bedroom, they said.
The women also lost two cats to the blaze, though three other felines safely escaped, firefighters said. Their pet dog, however, was missing.
