Fire Ant Spread Threatens Safety
* In a county with a total current budget of $3.6 billion, it is hard to believe that county officials are unwilling to spend the estimated $80,000 to $150,000 needed to continue the fire ant eradication effort (April 9).
Based on the damages the imported pests cause in other states that total hundreds of millions of dollars a year, the county should be concerned about the potential for local public safety and property damages if the spread of the fire ants is left unchecked.
Instead of sitting on the sidelines waiting for state reimbursements, the county should take immediate action.
