The remains discovered on the remote canyon property of a convicted sex offender are those of two missing area women, police said Saturday.

Police Capt. Bart Topham said authorities identified the bodies discovered Friday as those of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student Rachel Newhouse, 20, and Cuesta College student Aundria Crawford, 20. They were identified through dental records.

At a crowded news conference, Topham had no comment when asked how the women died or if they had been sexually assaulted. The parents of the two women have been in San Luis Obispo in recent days, but were not available for comment.

The owner of the property where the remains were found, Rex Allan Krebs, has not been arrested, but he has been identified by authorities as the primary suspect in the case.

Newhouse disappeared Nov. 12, and Crawford had been missing since March 12.

Krebs, 33, was jailed for parole violations in late March and has been in custody ever since. He was serving time in prison when another woman, Cal Poly student Kristin Smart, 19, disappeared from campus in May 1996. He is not a suspect in that case, police said.
