Events to Highlight Worker Safety Issues
One was crushed by a 35-ton concrete wall. Another was run over by the wheels of a pavement compactor.
The names of these men and 13 other Los Angeles County workers appear on a grim list of 1998 workplace fatalities. Today--the 10th annual Workers’ Memorial Day--they will be remembered at events sponsored by organized labor to highlight worker safety issues.
In 1997, the latest year for which figures are available, California reported 636 on-the-job deaths and 670,500 work-related injuries or illnesses.
After a memorial breakfast co-sponsored by the L.A. County Federation of Labor and the UCLA Occupational Safety & Health Program, activists planned to march to LAX in support of security workers.
