Alhambra City Council Delays Mortuary Vote

Share

The City Council has postponed voting on a proposed zoning measure that would allow mortuaries in certain areas of the city.

Instead, it requested that concerned residents work out their differences directly with representatives from Rose Hills Co., a Whittier-based cemetery and mortuary operator seeking to open a funeral home in a building in the 900 block of Garfield Avenue, said City Clerk Frances Moore.

At Monday night’s council meeting, more than 30 people spoke out on the proposed amendment to the city’s zoning law, which currently bans funeral homes from certain areas along Garfield. The amendment, which would allow funeral homes if conditional use permits are obtained, was proposed by Rose Hills.

The city’s development services department has recommended that council members vote in favor of the amendment because the city has not had any problems with its two existing mortuaries.
