The UCLA Film and Television Archive’s Kid’s Flicks series continues with two, shall we say, funky animated films. First up, “Yellow Submarine,” George Dunning’s 1968 modish adventure that features the (animated) Beatles battling the Blue Meanies in Pepperland. Also, the 1996 Disney film “James and the Giant Peach,” director Henry Selick’s live-action and stop-motion animated take on the classic children’s fantasy book by Roald Dahl.

10 am: Workshop

Get ready for Mother’s Day by bonding with Mom at Just for Us. The interactive two-hour program, created by Carole Isenber and Madeline Sharples, is designed to strengthen familial ties through storytelling, humor and discussion.

6 pm: Poetry

Some local poets have turned Hilltop Park into an inspiration point of sorts. This Sunday, and May 16, June 6 and June 20, the Sunday Sunset Poetry Picnic will have poets, storytellers and musicians. Bring a picnic and maybe a poem--appropriate for a family audience--to join in. The new park is at the summit of Long Beach’s Signal Hill, where parking is free and plentiful. That alone should inspire verse.

7 pm: Benefit

Whoopi Goldberg, Gregory Hines and Patrice Rushen are among the entertainers expected at a benefit for the New Roads schools at the Conga Room. The $50 tickets also include a raffle for $5,000 or a trip to Jamaica. Money raised will benefit the three private schools, where about 60% of the students receive financial aid.

4 pm: Music

Early music, as performed by the four women of Anonymous 4 and the six men of Lionheart, comes to UCLA in a program including music of Johannes Ockeghrem (1410-1497) in Royce Hall. Separately and together, the two touring groups relive for us the musical 15th century.

Bone Structure and Joel Harrison and the Empty Hammer, two quartets that challenge the parameters of conventional jazz and improvisation, play new music at the Open Gate Theatre as part of a monthly gathering of the wired, wild and wonderful. Bring an open mind.
