SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 16-month-old Huntington Beach girl drowned early Wednesday in a swimming pool that had been fenced in at her Huntington Beach home, police said.

A caretaker at the home, on the 16000 block of Niantic Circle, found the toddler in the pool about 10 a.m. and pulled her out while a baby-sitter called for help, police said.

Officers who arrived at the scene found the toddler unresponsive and not breathing, and they immediately tried to resuscitate the child, turning their efforts over to paramedics when they arrived.

The toddler was transported to Huntington Beach Hospital, where she was treated by emergency room staff but died about 11:30 a.m., Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said.

Ochoa said the girl’s parents were at work and the 31-year-old caretaker and 28-year-old baby-sitter were the only adults present at the time of the incident. Both spoke only Spanish, Ochoa said.

“Because of the language issues and emotions involved, we’re still trying to work out the details,” Ochoa said.

Police are investigating how the child fell into the pool, he said, but they believe the drowning was accidental.
