Tigers Recall Kapler After Strong Showing in Toledo

Outfielder Gabe Kapler, who played at Taft High and Moorpark College, was recalled Thursday by the Detroit Tigers from triple-A Toledo.

Kapler started the season with the Tigers and had one hit in six at-bats before being demoted to Toledo, where he was batting .315 with three home runs and 14 runs batted in.

He replaces center fielder Brian Hunter, traded by Detroit to Seattle on Wednesday.

Outfielder Jacob Cruz (Channel Islands) was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Cleveland Indians and optioned to triple-A Buffalo of the International League.

Double A--Left fielder Kurt Airoso (Cal State Northridge) hit a three-run home run and a run-scoring single to help Jacksonville (Tigers) defeat Chattanooga, 5-4. . . . First baseman Rich Aude (Chatsworth) hit two doubles for Birmingham (White Sox) in a 6-5 loss to Greenville.

JETHAWKS

Joel Ramirez had two doubles and drove in the first run of the game for the Lancaster JetHawks in a 6-2 California League loss at San Jose. His first double came after a Shawn McCorkle single in the third inning to put the JetHawks (8-13) on the scoreboard.

The Giants scored five runs in the fourth inning, with Brett Casper delivering a three-run homer, his first of the season.

Mike Marchiano singled to center field in the sixth inning to drive in Ramirez, who had doubled.
