Council to Consider Gambling License

The manager of the Ash Street Card Club hopes the chips fall in his favor tonight when the City Council considers crafting an ordinance that would allow the card room to reopen.

The Elks-owned club was ordered to close Thursday by state gambling officials, after manager Michael Moore unsuccessfully challenged a state law requiring all Elks Lodge officials involved with the club to undergo background checks.

Moore approached the council at a July 19 meeting to request that the Elks gambling license be transferred to him, so that he would be the only person requiring a background check. The move would also reclassify the Ash Street Card Club as a for-profit business rather than a benevolent organization.

Tonight council members will consider whether city staff should consider alternatives. If the council approves the item, an ordinance could return for council consideration on Sept. 13.
