Airport Authority Resolves to Reduce Effect of Noise
Amid intense negotiations over its new terminal, the Burbank--Glendale--Pasadena Airport Authority passed a resolution Monday aimed at further lessening the effect of aircraft noise on area homes.
By 2015, according to the resolution, no homes will be located within the 65-decibel noise footprint area. That is the area where the 24-hour average noise levels are 65 decibels or louder.
Airport officials estimate there are now 1,401 homes in this “noise impact area.” They plan to reduce that number to zero by expanding the insulation of homes against noise and continuing to restrict operations of noisier jets.
“For the first time, the Airport Authority is attempting to put a time limit on eliminating the noise impact area associated with this airport,” spokesman Victor Gill said. “This should be a signal that the noise problem in the future will be less significant, not more significant.”
Thus far, the airport has received $22 million to soundproof homes. A total of about 2,300 homes are eligible to receive the improvements, including double-paned windows and extra insulation.
Officials from the airport and the city of Burbank said negotiations were continuing Monday on the framework for a new terminal building.
