New Fire Limits for Season in Effect

The U.S. Forest Service has begun enforcing new fire restrictions in Los Padres National Forest.

The regulations will remain in effect throughout the fire season, which usually ends in late fall after the forest receives at least 2 inches of rainfall.

Under the rules, open fires, campfires and charcoal fires are prohibited outside of developed recreation sites or designated areas, even with a California campfire permit. Lanterns and portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are allowed with a permit.

Also, forest visitors must clear flammable material for 5 feet in all directions from camp stoves, have a shovel available and have someone responsible for the stove when it is in use. Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle, building, developed recreation site, designated areas or in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that is cleared of flammable material.

California campfire permits are available at no charge at any Forest Service office.
