With Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams and Monica Seles about to invade Manhattan Beach for next week’s Acura Classic tennis tournament, there is no better time than now to check out the WTA Tour’s revamped Web page. The improved site, which stresses easy navigation and in-depth content, was designed by American Cities Studios, which has designed Web pages for 12 major league baseball teams.

The most impressive aspect of the site is the player information link. If a player has a WTA world ranking, her information appears on the site. Just click on the letter starting the player’s last name and you’ll get ranking and information about that player.

I wanted current information about Glendora’s Jolene Watanabe and the link gave me everything I wanted to know. She turned pro in 1990 after playing at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She ranks 126th in the world and her biggest victory was over Jennifer Capriati at the 1997 Australian Open. A hard-core tennis fan could spend hours checking out players.

A message board and links to other tennis sites are available, as well as a poll asking fans to vote on which player they would like to see end the year No. 1. Steffi Graf (30%) leads Hingis (27%), followed by Davenport (25%), Williams (9%) and Seles (6%).

One negative is that the site lacks updated tournament information. I checked it late Wednesday night and the lead story on the TIG Tennis Classic in Carlsbad, Calif., was still Graf’s retiring from her match against Amy Frazier Tuesday night. There was nothing about Davenport or Williams advancing until Thursday morning.
