State officials have awarded nearly $200,000 to three Ventura County agencies as part of an ongoing effort to help homeless people find and maintain shelter.

The federal emergency shelter grants were awarded by the state Department of Housing and Community Development as part of a $5.5-million allocation to 68 agencies statewide.

Thousand Oaks-based Many Mansions will receive $64,301 to augment its low-income housing programs, while the Salvation Army’s transitional living center in Ventura will receive a $68,788 boost.

State officials also awarded $57,934 to Catholic Charities Inc., which has offices in Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Ventura and Simi Valley. That money will go to help poor people in those cities pay rent and overdue utility bills.

“We’re very pleased,” said Mary Ann Decaen, program coordinator for Catholic Charities. “This is going to give people the respite they need to get back on track.”

Over the last five years, the Department of Housing and Community Development has awarded more than $30 million to help provide housing for Californians.
