They claim to be representing the families of slain law enforcement officers, pulling the heart strings of potential donors.
They sound considerate, empathetic, even friendly, but authorities warn that these tele-vultures are gunning for your money--and it’s not for a good cause.
Newport Beach police have received a half-dozen complaints within the last week about solicitors who are seeking contributions for law enforcement organizations. No one has taken the bait, but police want to ensure there won’t be any victims. “They seem to focus on one area and move on to another area code,” said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Mike McDermott. “Luckily, people got suspicious and haven’t sent anything.”
“Anybody who receives a call for solicitation should call [their] local law enforcement agency,” said Lt. Hector Rivera, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department. “There are organizations who try to raise money legitimately, but it isn’t done by phone.”
Most police agencies don’t engage in phone solicitation, choosing instead to conduct business in person. Anyone pledging to pick up a check or cash should raise suspicion for potential contributors.
