Paperwork Delays Murder Case Hearing

A court appearance was postponed Friday for the son of a Valley-based Los Angeles Police Department sergeant. The son is accused of fatally shooting his brother-in-law in an alleged dispute over video games.

Paul Myers, 30, of Moorpark was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of gunning down brother-in-law Jason Weaver, 26, in a garage at Myers’ home.

Myers was due in court Friday to enter a plea to a charge of murder, but prosecutors said a paperwork delay prevented them from bringing formal charges. He is expected in court Monday.

Authorities said Myers shot Weaver six times with a .38 revolver, with five bullets striking his body and one his head.

Myers is the son of Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. James N. Myers, who is based in the San Fernando Valley’s Devonshire Division. Myers used his father’s department-issued gun in the shooting, LAPD authorities said Friday. It is unlikely that James Myers will face any disciplinary action, the officials said.

Myers is being held without bail at Ventura County Jail in the medical ward. Authorities declined to say why Myers was in the ward, which typically holds inmates with physical ailments, suicidal tendencies or psychological problems.

Myers is also wanted by the Army for desertion, said Leta Deyerly, a spokeswoman for the Army Personnel Command Public Affairs office in Virginia. Deyerly said Myers enlisted in the Army in May 1997 and began basic training that May 19 in Fort Benning, Ga. Within a month, Myers left his station and was declared AWOL. He was charged with desertion a month later.
