HUNTINGTON BEACH
Sewage will be diverted past an underground line that may have ruptured and spewed contaminants into the ocean off Huntington State Beach.
Two 1,300-foot bypass pipes on a sand berm along Pacific Coast Highway will allow drainage of the buried sewer pipe so it can be inspected for cracks Thursday with a remote-controlled camera.
If the 260-foot line buried 40 feet below the surface is leaking, the Orange County Sanitation District said it will be repaired.
High bacteria levels in the ocean have closed all but half a mile of Huntington State Beach.
The bypass pipes will carry 4.6 million gallons of raw sewage a day from southern Huntington Beach to a treatment plant along the Santa Ana River.
