IRVINE

As a September deadline looms, Irvine is in danger of losing funding for repairs to the flood control system that was eroded during the heavy rains of 1995 and 1997.

Orange County officials said that a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is all that blocks the renovation of the Como Storm Channel, which runs between the El Modena Irvine Channel and Jeffrey Road.

Designed to relieve flood pressures during heavy storms, the Como Storm Channel is part of a 300-mile network of artificial waterways built 40 years ago.

Under the county plan, work crews will regrade the storm channel and its side slopes while shoring them up with rock to protect against further deterioration.
