The City Council on Monday unanimously voted to ask that the city’s staff prepare a franchise agreement renewal with Cox Communications for cable services in the eastern part of the city. Media One currently serves the rest of the city. The council will consider that contract renewal in the near future, the city staff reported.

Both contracts would require that the cable provider broadcast live council meetings, as well as rebroadcasts, and dedicate a public channel to the city’s happenings. The providers also will have to provide free Internet access to city facilities, libraries and local schools.
