Driver Surrenders After 3-Hour Chase

Share

A man suspected of driving a stolen truck led police on a three-hour freeway chase Thursday, occasionally traveling at high speeds and at one point throwing out a bag that authorities said may have contained methamphetamines.

Jason Hayes, 28, of Chino surrendered after the vehicle apparently ran out of gas in Riverside County, police said. They gave this account:

Hayes was seen by Orange police officers at Tustin Street and Chapman Avenue about 9:45 a.m. in a Ford pickup with a license plate registered to another vehicle. They pursued him and were joined by officers from other agencies, including the California Highway Patrol.

The chase wound through surface streets and onto several freeways, at times reaching speeds of 105 mph. It ended in Corona about 12:30 p.m.

Hayes was arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, possessing illegal drugs, evading police and reckless driving.

A device that appeared to be a pipe bomb was found inside the truck, so police closed the Riverside Freeway at Lincoln Avenue, snarling traffic for hours while a bomb squad was brought in. The device turned out to be a fake.

A van carrying a TV news crew overturned on the freeway near the end of the chase. Veteran KTLA reporter Stan Chambers and cameraman Carlos Quintero, who were in the vehicle, were not seriously hurt. Chambers was treated at Riverside Community Hospital and released, authorities said.

No one else was hurt.
