Columbine High

Share

Was it only me or was there something grotesquely wrong with the picture of the students returning to Columbine High School (Aug. 17)? It was only four months ago that more than a dozen of these kids’ friends and fellow students were slaughtered by two of their classmates. Now we see them celebrating as if they had just won some sort of national award, led on by their principal and others.

I understand that grieving must eventually end, but wouldn’t one think a little restraint is still called for? As a parent I can’t (thank God) imagine what it must be like to have a child killed in that or any other manner, but I can understand how this scene of unrestrained joy might be disturbing to the parents of the kids who were killed.

Columbine, a school with a football team but no library. A pep rally that celebrates the group and ignores the individual. How fitting.
