A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured early Thursday when he lost control of his patrol car and slammed into a power pole on Thousand Oaks Boulevard, authorities said.

Deputy David Bonebright, 25, was in critical but stable condition Thursday night in the intensive care unit at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, said hospital spokeswoman Kris Carraway-Bowman.

Bonebright underwent surgery Thursday afternoon for several fractures in his left arm and left leg, Carraway-Bowman said.

Bonebright crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Cord Avenue about 3:30 a.m., sheriff’s Capt. Keith Parks said. The patrol car spun around at least once before striking the pole and trapping the deputy.

The force of the impact crumpled the car’s frame and forced rescuers to work for an hour to free Bonebright, Parks said.

At the time of the crash, Bonebright was not in pursuit and Parks said it appears he was traveling around the posted 45 mph speed limit. Investigators have not had a chance to interview the deputy to find out what happened.

“It appears to be an accident,” Parks said.

Bonebright was halfway through his graveyard shift when the crash occurred. He is a five-year member of the force.
