New Blip on Local Radar Has the Potential to Grow

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Fullerton now has another in its stable of nocturnal dance promotions--it’s Club Karibe at Chaser’s Club.

Although Karibe did not get off to a strong start, it has potential as another successful Fullerton dance destination.

Live bands play salsa and merengue and there is a party atmosphere despite the sparse crowd.

“I’m not disappointed because I know what I’m capable of doing,” Alex Lemus of Salsa Star Promotions said of his new club at Chaser’s.

Lemus didn’t enjoy immediate success at his salsa/merengue-themed promotion at Tia Juana’s in Irvine, but gradually it grew to be a winner. It was a matter of months before that nightspot saw heavy crowds.

On a recent weekend night, several couples swiveled and turned to the salsa beat with such flair that it was obvious they had been practicing.

Those who aren’t in the mood to dance can sit comfortably taking in the Caribbean rhythms near the bar or the dance floor.

Thanks to the top-notch sound system, the lyrics flowing from the singers sounded crystal-clear. Unlike in most clubs, where the speakers are located throughout the room, these boxes are directly in front of the stage, but the tunes still carry. So, if you want to protect your hearing, resist the urge to dance too close to the stage.

What to do besides dance? Enjoy a snack. The taco bar offers a choice of beef or chicken with condiments such as cilantro, salsa, and jalapeno peppers.

If you still have some cash to spare, wash down the grub with domestic beers ($3.25), or imports ($3.75). Well drinks go for $4.25, call drinks $4.75 and premiums $5.75.

And if you don’t know how to salsa yet, get with the program. Alma Frey offers salsa dance lessons at all levels for $10 before the club opens.

Salsa Star Promotions also offers the Social Club at Chaser’s for the 18-and-older party crowd with rock en espanol, house and classic alternative on Fridays.
