Arizonan Held in Child Support Case

Share

A former Ventura County resident was arrested in Arizona Thursday on suspicion of failing to pay more than $182,000 in child support for his son and daughter who live in Simi Valley, authorities said.

William H. Callaway, 40, was taken into custody at his home in Flagstaff, Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Ron Carpenter said. He remained in jail Thursday night pending an extradition hearing scheduled today.

Ventura County authorities began investigating Callaway in April after learning he allegedly failed to pay court-ordered support of $688 a month. Interest over the past decade helped the bill grow, Carpenter said.

At the time authorities started the investigation, Callaway was working at a car dealership in Arizona, Carpenter said. He left that job to become a self-employed mechanic who worked out of his home, Carpenter said.

Callaway left Ventura County for Arizona more than 10 years ago and authorities allege he has never made a support payment. He was jailed on suspicion of misdemeanor failure to provide financial support and contempt of court.

If convicted, he could go to jail for a year. The charges are misdemeanors because they are first offenses, Carpenter said.
