The Orange County Board of Education passed a resolution Thursday opposing two state bills that would create comprehensive school-based health care centers in California.

If passed, State Assembly Bills 1363 and 920 would provide for the creation and funding of about 200 such centers, providing basic medical and mental health care, including reproductive health services, through the schools. Under the measure, clinics and school districts would have some leeway in determining whether parents should be notified regarding care their children received through the centers.

Ann King of Huntington Beach called the state measure “an attack on relationships between parents and students.”

The Orange County resolution, introduced by board member Ken Williams, states that the board “will take necessary measures to ensure that such programs are not instituted by the Orange County Department of Education.”

Three board members approved the measure. Board member Elizabeth Parker and Vice President Sheila Meyers abstained from the vote.
