Change of Term
* I understand why “Activist Wants to Put a Muzzle on Those Who Say ‘Pet Owner’ ” (Aug. 15) mocks veterinarian Elliot Katz’s effort to replace the term “pet owner” with “pet guardian.” Obviously, your reporter would never harm an animal and, therefore, sees no purpose in such a seemingly small change of terms. However, some pet “owners” may see an animal as a “thing” that they “own” and believe they have a right to abuse or neglect. Whether or not the term is officially changed, this debate will have served a purpose of compassion if it touches the conscience of one abuser and prevents the abuse of one animal.
