Click Here to Fight World Hunger

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with food this time of year, what with office potlucks and parties and Christmas candy tempting from the supermarket aisle. But there’s a way to do something for millions of people suffering a worse problem: starvation. With a click of your mouse, the Hunger Site will donate food on your behalf to starving people around the world.

How does it work? The site, started by an individual, enlists corporate sponsors who donate rice, wheat, maize and other staples based on the number of people stopping here on the Internet. (You’re only allowed one click or donation request per day.) In turn, the sponsors get their names on the site--good PR. Donations are made through the United Nations World Food program, which has projects in 80 countries. You can follow a daily tally of donations; Nov. 22, for instance, more than 286,000 donations were made through the site--a total of 80,000 pounds of food. The formula for figuring the donations is spelled out on the site, which also offers translations from Arabic to Urdu. According to the Hunger Site, about 24,000 people die every day from hunger or related causes.
