They’re Glad Big Brother Is Watching

Share

I was unable to immediately write a letter about a piece that had moved me because I was blinded by tears that filled my eyes as I read Bill Plaschke’s story about a relationship that is a testament to the Big Brother program [Nov. 25].

What a lovely and heartwarming story, and thanks to Bill Plaschke for writing it as well as living it. It was the nicest Thanksgiving Day present The Times could have given us.

The caring and depth of Bill’s relationship with Andrew Fishbein has moved me to reassociate with Jewish Big Brothers and once again connect with a youngster in need.

I encourage other men to consider the donation of a minimum amount of time to help enrich the life of a youngster whose life is without immediate male influence.

Thank you, Bill, for rekindling a light of holiday hope.

Bill Plaschke is one of my all-time favorite sportswriters. Now, every time I read his column it will have even greater meaning, knowing of his 20-year special relationship as Andrew Fishbein’s “Big Brother.” Bill Plaschke is not only a terrific sportswriter, the man is a humanitarian in the fullest meaning of the word.

Kudos to Bill Plaschke for his Big Brother story on Thanksgiving Day. It was a moving, heart-lifting piece of journalism, very appropriate for the occasion. The editor should also be congratulated for placing the article in the main section of the newspaper, where people like my spouse, who does not usually read the sports section, saw the article and was deeply moved by it.

Bill Plaschke’s column was the perfect start to a Thanksgiving morning. As I brushed the tears away, there came a wonderful sound straight from heaven . . . Jim Murray was applauding.

I take back every negative thing I’ve said about Bill Plaschke.
