The urge to exaggerate the importance of conductors must be as strong as the drive for food or sex. Mark Swed refers to the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, in his Dec. 3 review of its “Messiah” performance (“An Exciting Announcement of the ‘Messiah’ ”), as the orchestra “[conductor Nicholas] McGegan founded in the Bay Area 19 years ago.”

The orchestra was founded in 1981, but McGegan was not hired to conduct it until 1985, after it was established, thriving and even touring. It came to play concerts in Los Angeles on several occasions in its pre-McGegan days.
