Silverio Espinoza barged into the home of his estranged wife early Saturday, shot and killed his 19-year-old daughter and her 21-year-old boyfriend, and injured five others before police shot and killed him as he tried to flee, authorities said.

Police do not know what prompted the shootings at the one-story home on the quiet, dead-end street, Napa Police Lt. Steve Geoghegan said.

Espinoza showed up at the house about 12:15 a.m. and knocked on the door. After his 10-year-old son opened the door, Espinoza burst in and immediately shot and killed his daughter, Anjelina Espinoza, Geoghegan said.

The 10-year-old son then grabbed his sister’s 1-year-old son and fled.

Police say that Espinoza began beating his 46-year-old wife with a revolver. Then he went to another room where he shot and killed Phillip Lester, his daughter’s boyfriend.

In the meantime, the wife’s 28-year-old son was hurt when he dove out a window. The son’s 26-year-old wife and their 6-year-old daughter were shot.

Espinoza’s wife fled to a neighbor’s house and began pounding on his door. Her husband followed her outside and shot her and the 61-year-old neighbor after he answered the door.

Espinoza told his 10-year-old son that he was going to kill himself. He walked to his truck and drove a few blocks before ramming a police car, pinning an officer inside. He began shooting at officers, who returned fire and killed him.

The 28-year-old son who was hurt when he jumped out the window was treated and released. His wife remained in serious condition Saturday, and their daughter was in critical condition at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Espinoza’s estranged wife and her neighbor also were in serious condition. Authorities were not releasing the names of the injured people.

The injured police officer was treated and released.

Geoghegan said he did not know whether Espinoza had a criminal history or whether officers had previously responded to domestic disputes at his wife’s house.

Edgar Sandoval, 20, who lives across the street from where police shot Espinoza, said he attended school with Lester.

“It makes me feel sad because these are my friends,” he said. “This is the first time anything like this has happened here.”
