Arts Groups Rewarded by Howard Foundation
The Thelma Pearl Howard Foundation, set up by the estate of the late Walt Disney’s live-in cook and housekeeper, has awarded more than $380,000 to 19 nonprofit groups, including several arts organizations.
The grant program aims to help local disadvantaged and homeless children, with an emphasis on education in art, music and culture.
This year’s grant recipients include American Youth Symphony ($24,940), Bethune Theatredance ($25,000), Deaf West Theater Company ($20,000) and the Music Center Education Division ($25,000).
The grants are funded through the estate of Howard, who received shares of Walt Disney Co. stock at holidays and on special occasions throughout her 30-year tenure as a member of the Disney house staff.
The foundation, founded in 1995, has awarded a total of $1.4 million since its inception.
