Books Donated to Local Schools

Boxes and boxes of books, including J.K. Rowling’s popular Harry Potter series, filled Erwin Street Elementary School’s library Monday morning.

The school’s 1,040 students can thank baby Roxanne Sonnet Dierking and her mother, Los Angeles Board of Education member Caprice Young.

To honor Roxanne’s August birth, Young started a book drive to help two schools in her district--Erwin and West Hollywood Elementary School.

Instead of gifts, Young asked people to donate books. BookEnds, a local nonprofit literacy group that coordinated the effort, identified the two schools as needing books.

A spokeswoman for BookEnds estimated Erwin received about 315 books. “Needless to say, I’m thrilled,” Principal Marla Mondheim said. “Like most school libraries, we’re trying to purge the old books. Our kids love to read.”
