Matt Barnes at least got to get in uniform and take part in pregame warmups this time, but didn’t get clearance for an actual return to the Bruins because one of his grades has not yet been posted. So the toll for his academic suspension increased to five games, not to mention one delayed trip, since the team will be going to Hawaii today without him.
“Hopefully, I can fly on Monday,” he said.
That is a possibility. The wait continues for the outcome of an English class, and administrators have said they would purchase a ticket for Barnes to travel a day or two behind the rest of the Bruins if he can make the three-day tournament that begins Tuesday. What is not clear is whether they would pay for him to make one or two games.
It would be a bright moment for the sophomore forward. Saturday was another disappointing one, the first game in which he was eligible to return.
“It was tough,” Barnes said. “It’s just waiting on the grade. I know I passed the class. She [the professor] just has to mail the grades in.”
