ESSEX, Md. — Four activists with the anti-war group Plowshares were arrested Sunday after they broke through a fence at a Maryland Air National Guard base and hammered on aircraft.
Among those arrested was Philip Berrigan, a former priest arrested for civil disobedience more than 100 times, according to a statement from Jonah House, a Plowshares residence in Baltimore.
They used bolt cutters to get on the base in Essex at about 4 a.m. and vandalized one A-10 Thunderbolt jet, the Maryland Air National Guard said. Aircraft damage appeared limited.
Members of Plowshares have taken hammers to military ships, planes and other weapons on about 60 occasions since 1980.
