DANA POINT

Orange County Health Care Agency officials discouraged swimming at Dana Strand Beach near Dana Point promontory earlier this week after tests revealed the water contained unusually high bacteria levels, agency spokeswoman Monica Mazur said.

Signs posted 150 feet on either side of the beach’s entrance on Selva Road warn of the potential hazards to swimmers and surfers, although swimming is not prohibited in the area, Mazur said.

The agency may remove the postings today if samples taken Thursday afternoon reveal a lower bacteria count than was measured Wednesday, Mazur said. If the problem persists, the signs will remain in place at least through the weekend, she said.
