Camp Pendleton officials have fired back at recent statements made by City Council members who have charged that the Marines have been misleading and secretive regarding a new helicopter training facility.

During a Dec. 15 City Council meeting, several members expressed frustration over how the Marines have communicated with city officials since plans for the Helicopter Outlying Landing Field were announced.

“We are dismayed by many of the comments made by some members of the City Council at this last meeting,” Marines’ community liaison Larry Rannals wrote in a letter to the council. “ 1/8The Corps has 3/8 in good faith provided the city manager and members of the council . . . with straight-forward, factual and detailed information relating to the purpose and need for the 1/8helicopter landing field 3/8.”

The Marines’ plans call for two parallel 4,000-foot airstrips to be built about 3 1/2 miles from San Clemente city limits. An environmental assessment conducted by the facility states the field will serve 430 daily training operations.
