* Re “6 HMOs Probed Over Drug Approval Policy,” Jan. 28: Ah, for the good old days. When you could make an appointment with any doctor of your choice. When he could prescribe a medication without checking your insurance’s formulary.

When “formulary” wasn’t an everyday word. When you didn’t have to wait for some wannabe doctor to OK a referral--when “refferal” wasn’t an everyday word. When you didn’t have to travel to the next town to get a blood test. When you could go to the hospital in the town you were vacationing in without getting permission from your insurance.

When your prescription wasn’t turned down because it was too expensive. When your prescription wasn’t turned down because it was experimental (HMO for “expensive”). When you didn’t have to leave the hospital before the anesthetic wore off.
