A hospital surplus delivery truck carrying donated household items ran a red light Wednesday, hit one car and rammed another, critically injuring a 19-year-old driver and jamming business traffic for hours, Newport Beach police said.
Rebecca Burch, who was only two blocks from home, suffered severe head injuries in the 12:12 p.m. collision at Jamboree Road and University Drive in Newport Beach, police said. She was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana where she underwent surgery.
Police said the truck, driven by Eddie Bretado, 28, of Hawaiian Gardens, was heading north on Jamboree when it went through a red light, clipped a westbound University Drive car turning left and hit Burch’s car, which also was traveling west on University.
Burch’s father happened to pass by shortly after the accident and saw his daughter’s mangled car. He went to the hospital immediately, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Mike McDermott.
