From Staff Reports

Oxnard (19-6, 7-0) can wrap up an undefeated first season in the Pacific View League by beating Channel Islands (11-12, 5-2) tonight, but that doesn’t mean the Yellowjackets have dominated opponents in the five-team league.

Oxnard, ranked No. 9 in the region by The Times, beat Hueneme by one and five points, Camarillo by four and 10, and Channel Islands by four.

“We haven’t blown anybody out, except for Rio Mesa,” Coach Henry Lobo said. “Every game has been close.”

None was closer than a 61-60 victory over Hueneme on Friday night when Damian Tafoya hit the winning shot with five seconds left.

That clinched the league title for Oxnard and made Lobo admit he no longer missed “the challenge” of the eight-team Channel League.

“I didn’t realize how challenging it was going to be to play in this league,” he said. “I didn’t realize how much pressure there would be to win these cross-town rivalry games.”

North Hollywood is heading back to the scene of the crime, where Grant ended its 51-game Valley Pac-8 Conference winning streak on Lancer turf a year ago.

But if the game last week between the Mid-Valley League rivals is any indication, North Hollywood’s 13-game conference winning streak is safe.

North Hollywood defeated Grant, 83-68, ending the Lancers’ eight-game winning streak.

Grant, which lost seven of its first 13 games, sported a 28-point margin of victory during its streak and limited opponents to fewer than 40 points a game.

Coach Steve Blumwell of Grant is hoping to keep North Hollywood closer to 40 this time around.

“There wasn’t a lot of defense going on [in that game],” Blumwell said.

Tashean Thomas of North Hollywood, a four-year starter, set a record last week becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,420 points in 99 games.

Thomas surpassed Anna Celaya’s 1,410 points in 74 games. Celaya, now playing for Occidental College, ranks third in nation in scoring in Division III.
