Taking a Shine to All That Glitters

This season you’ll want to sparkle, quite literally. Sparkles are showing up in hair and on skin, and not just on those of young trendsetters like snowboarder girls. Taking a shine to beauty is easier than ever.

Twinkling Tresses: Mellies Sparkles are miniature crystals that attach to hair with Velcro. We test drove these sparkles in our hair all day, and aside from co-workers trying to brush them out, they were quite a success. Mellies Hair Artistry also makes attachable butterflies and flowers.

The sparkles and flowers are available for $10 to $100 at Fred Segal, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Barneys New York and hair salons.

Silver Wear: If your tastes are a little more sophisticated, Frederic Fekkai, that arbiter of hairstyles, has introduced a line of sterling silver hair accessories adorned with semiprecious stones.

The stones--fresh water pearls, citrine, amethyst and peridot--are set on headbands, barrettes, hairpins and hair sticks.

The accessories sell for $170 to $260 and are available at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills or at the Frederic Fekkai Salon in Beverly Hills.

Golden Girls: And finally, you might have noticed extra shine on the swimsuit models in the current Sports Illustrated issue.

The glow is courtesy of Sungirl, a SPF 40 sun block with colorful glitter.

Orange-based Natural Desires makes this, as well as glittering tanning gel, sunscreen and children’s sun block, all in an array of colors. The products sell for about $8 a 2.2-ounce bottle at local drugstores and surf shops.
