Norman Bernstein

Hearing about the attack on Principal Norman Bernstein (Feb. 3), I was at first shocked and saddened. That these cowards, hiding behind the mask of ethnic divisiveness, would beat up a peaceful man twice their age is an insult to my own Latino heritage.

When Bernstein taught me more in one hour about how to play the piano than weeks of strict lessons could, I was appreciative. I appreciate that gift even more now, 20-some years later. Bernstein didn’t treat me like a teenage Latino kid, he treated me like an eager kid who wanted to learn. My younger brother was best friends with the Bernsteins’ son. He was always treated like part of the family, as we all were by these good people.

I wouldn’t blame Bernstein if he chose not to return to the Panorama City school. If he doesn’t, the loss will be that of the children who would only benefit from the devotion to education Bernstein could have given them.
