Glamour Loses Out at Award Shows

Share

From the Fashion Police Blotter: They may have fame, fortune, and the world’s top designers, stylists, and hair and makeup artists at their beck and call, but today’s celebrities don’t have a whole lot of taste. That’s the consensus among those who weighed in on how some stars dress for award shows. It seems there are too many body-baring fashions and out-there hairstyles and too much slavish devotion to trends for your liking. What we need is a return to the old-fashioned, elegant, less-is-more, drop-dead glamour the stars symbolized decades ago.

Now, to your comments:

* “I feel that our society as a whole has lost its sense of how to dress for any occasion. People show up at weddings and funerals in shorts or jeans and T-shirts--it’s disgusting. The stars certainly have the money to dress up and make the occasions they attend truly festive. For example, Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair is beautiful, but long and straight just doesn’t have any glamour to it, as an upswept style would. Come on, stars!”

* “A woman should find a style that looks good on her and stick with it (like Goldie Hawn). Keeping with the latest trend doesn’t always mean looking good.”

* “Please, no more part-it-in-the-middle-and-let-it-all-hang-out hippie hairdos. And any celeb who can put out megabucks for a designer gown should be willing to put out mini-bucks for a foundation garment. We are not interested in seeing panty lines, saddlebags, navel indentations, love handles and sagging bosoms. Three cheers for all those who choose understated elegance in garb and coiffure.”

* “There’s no single ‘right’ look for the stars any more than there is for the rest of us. However, the stars do need to consider their face and figure types, as well as their personalities when selecting hairstyles and outfits for the award shows. But part of the fun of any show is the drama of seeing a celebrity in some far-out attire that nobody else in real life could get away with! My favorite looks are simple hairdos; clear, beautiful colors (jewel-tone reds, blues, greens); or pastels or black; accessorized with pearls or white satin. The classic, elegant looks of Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Di are sure winners.”

* “Hair, if not styled, is a collection of stringy, worm-like stuff. Cleavage has become boring and ugly.”

* “No face glitter. It’s distracting and looks like you just took down the Christmas tree. Don’t wear a dress if you can’t hide a bra under it. How about some stockings? You can afford it. How about a waistline? With all the talk about how skinny everyone is, no one has a waistline.”

* “Having lived through the metamorphosis of fashion from corsets to bikinis, the one element that has been lost is elegance. Designers such as Pauline Trigere, Bob Mackie, etc., designed timeless fashions and adaptable chic. In today’s throwaway society, anorexic models baring almost all convince young women that glamour is whatever is currently in. Never mind that in my opinion, most young women look like cheap hookers. How sad that the Spice Girls are emulated as the height of fashion. Give me Marlene Dietrich in matte jersey any time.”
