Sarah Kane, 28; Author of Violent Plays Shocked Britain

Sarah Kane, 28, who shocked British audiences with her plays about violence and abuse. The playwright burst onto the dramatic scene with the play “Blasted,” which opened at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1995. The play, featuring scenes of cannibalism, sexual abuse and one character biting out the eyes of another, was savaged by critics. But Kane followed with “Phaedra’s Love” in 1996 and “Cleansed” in 1998, continuing her themes of violence and despair. Her final play, “Crave,” a calmer script involving characters discussing despondency, opened in Edinburgh and moved to London last year. On Saturday in London, apparently a suicide.

Price Rice; Tuskegee Airman Flew 61 Missions in World War II

Price Rice, 83, retired Air Force colonel and a Tuskegee Airman who flew 61 combat missions during World War II. Rice was a fighter pilot with the all-black 99th Fighter Squadron trained at the Tuskegee Army Flying School in Tuskegee, Ala. He saw action in North Africa, Italy and Sicily. Rice retired from the Air Force in 1965 after 23 years of service and taught at Skyline Community College in San Bruno, Calif. On Sunday in San Francisco of complications of diabetes.
